Aero Carriage Paper Model by SiriusArtWorks Aero Carriage Paper Model by SiriusArtWorks
Finally, after almost five months of work, it’s finished!
I present the “Electro-Magnetic Aero Carriage”. My newest paper model.
I had to re-model a lot of this puppy because it just did not translate well to a paper model. I also redid a lot of the textures because the old ones just looked too dull.

Tools used:
Blender :D
Inkscape
Photoshop (sorry GIMP users ;) )
And an excellent freeware program called “Wood Workshop” from Spiral Graphics.
I also used their free texture viewer and texture packages.
Check them out if you get the chance.

I hope you enjoy putting this paper model together. It’s been a pain and a pleasure for me (well…mostly a pleasure :p )

Interesting models, I'd like to try them, but - is it me or there aren't download links for the files?

If Sirius don´t repair his cut-out templates, you can´t biuld that beautiful model. Now I a bit learn draw in sketchup, but can´t export 3D model from Sirius .pdo file :( Now I build some stuff to Fallout Rob-Co terminal, but in future sure will look at this model and try repair it.

o_O FLATTERY?  No thanks, its pain in ass for me, it´s better unfold in pepakura designer :P

Wow I didn't know it was you until I saw the beautiful model. I have come to your page so many times and I am just beginning to know how to get around on the site. I think it is overwhelming at first. I still have so much to learn but I love your art. I have just started in SteamPunk. What wonderful art. I love it. I do miniatures and have seen so much of it out there. I am always in awe. And that is a good thing. If we loose our Awe, we loose desire.

Thank you for the kind words :)
You really fall in love with Steampunk, it's such an open-ended art form. And you get to see so much creativity it becomes mind boggling.

And I couldn't agree more, a world without awe is a boring world indeed.

A nice SteamPunk look! I hope to try my hand at it some day soon. I have an LZ 127 that is waiting for some instructions and, when I get that finished, I will maybe use that base model and see what I can do to punk it up a bit. I am thinking of switching over to Blender for modelling (Im using metasequoia and pepakura at the moment) so I will have to look for some tutorials to learn it by.
I pretty much stink at graphic arts but I keep plodding away at it. It is the one thing that makes a good model a great model. You got the skills and you should feel proud!

It makes me feel good when people appreciate my work.

If you are looking into creating your own paper models you may want to try a program called Google SketchUp. There is a free version of the program (which is what I use). And there is a free plugin for it called Flattery. You can model, texture and unfold you model all in the same program and it is much easier to learn than Blender. Don't get me wrong, I love Blender but for paper models it's a bit of a pain ;)

And don't worry about your graphic art skills. It all improves with practice :D

I guess I am just too lazy to post pics.
I'm working on a set of Victorian houses right now so I guess I can post pics of the finished model.

I´m glad to help you ;-)

at first I try print model in +/- half size (4 page on A4 with Adobe Acrobat) and think its not correct printed (fit to page with no scale), then print original size from .pdo ... and the same result

now I try build all parts ("engine", wing etc) and will see, what is in right size (engine have good size parts D1, D3, D4, but front "halfsfere" D2 is little bigger) and compare between subgroups (fuselage- wing, fuselage- engine)

and last question, what presents pieces D5 in "reality", something like electric coil?

The D5 piece is indeed a coil :)

I created the pdf if letter format (8.5" x 11"). I guess I should create my paper models in both for US and Europe. Sorry, I didn't think about that :(

IMHO paper size is crucial problem only if someone will build model in certain scale
... in basic size is model +/- 1:16, but in boss´s shelf is scale irrelevant 8-)

now one "funny" picture of 3 print size from 1 page:
- pdf (100% print size)
- pdo (no adjust scale), this is my test build
- pdo (adjust scale)

bigger problem is variously size follow-up parts and I have question: what
you wait from me, you need only iformation about wrong size of parts
(example: pieces B1- B3 are bigger than B4- B7, pieces B8- B13
are smaller than B4- B7), or you need exact specification about +/- scalling in %?
(B1 is 9% bigger than pieces B4- B7, pieces B8, B9 are 1% smaller than B4- B7)

when I will build model in accurate scale (1:33, standard scale of paper planes) must at first convert pdf to png pictures and than print with accurate DPI (but it´s not a problem)

Yes, please tell me what parts seem to be out of scale.
I am still wondering if I should make two versions. A4 (European) and Letter (US).

Do you think that is the problem?

:icontoudi2:
toudi2 Featured By Owner Apr 3, 2011
letter(US)/ A4 (european) is sure not the problem, because part B1 and B5 is in the same sheet, but B1 is bigger and B5 is normal size and if you print ALL sheets with the same setting on printer, all sheets will be printed correct

One important question, you try build this model from uploaded .pdf/ .pdo files? I try, but no one piece of fuselage have good bigness :frustrated: , part B1 its too big for pieces B2/ B3 (front of this pieces is small), but tail is larger than front part of cockpit from pieces B4/ B5, and other parts of fuselage have similar problems ... and unfoldig of parts B1 and D2 is not good, you have gaps on head of "forks" (magenta), my solution representated with red color has been succesfull

but model is wonderful and I will build this anyway

I took a look at your gallery and I really appreciate you taking the time to show the progress.

I am sorry you are having such difficulty with it. I will take what you showed me and improve the way the model patterns are laid out.

I can not thank you enough for the information you have given me!

Richard,

Cool and beautiful model. Congratulations.

But I have a question: due to its size, estecially wings and body diameter, wouldn't it be advisable to build it preparing pevioulsy a set of ribs and cardboard (1 mm, perhaps) reinforcements to suport wings. I have a feeling that if it's built as in your instructions, the paper won't be strong enough to bare the weight of wings only no the glued contact surfaces.

Still, it looks beautiful and i'll assemble it. Probably developing my own set of ribs.

I thought about that myself but was unable to come up with a decent solution yet. Most likely I will update the model later with supports and bulkheads.

Building the prototype I did not have an issue with it though because I use a heavy card stock.
